The surgeon with this detachment and myself became intimate. He was an elderly man—much traveled—an epicure and a gourmand; his quarters occupied the entire upper story, and his cuisine abounded with canned stuffs, especially meats, and relishes, spices, flavorings, and pungent condiments, the names of which I do not know. He did his own preparing and used a large chafing dish. He was too much given to eccentricity to find congeniality with his fellow officers but was extremely entertaining to one who was a good listener and who found enjoyment in oddities. There was an attraction in sharing this man’s hospitality in that dimly lighted, spacious loft, enclosed with adobe and roofed with ponderous timbering, watching him grope around to find this and that to add to the concoction that bubbled in the chafing dish, talking as he worked, perhaps of some escapade of his in the capitals of Europe or of his amours elsewhere.
